Nota d'usoIl verbo piacere viene spesso tradotto con “to like”. Occorre però ricordare che questi due verbi hanno una costruzione diversa perché “to like” è transitivo e richiede sempre un oggetto: Che cosa ne pensi di questa canzone? Mi piace, What do you think of this song? I like it (non, letteralmente, I like). -

Nota d'usoQuando to like è seguito da un verbo, questo può essere nella forma in -ing o all'infinito preceduto da to. L'uso dell'infinito è più comune in inglese americano, mentre nel Regno Unito si utilizza di norma la forma in -ing. Inoltre, in inglese britannico, c'è una sottile differenza di significato tra le due costruzioni. Se si usa l'infinito si vuole sottolineare il fatto che si pensa che l'azione in questione sia una buona idea: I like to have a nap after lunch, mi piace fare un sonnellino dopo pranzo (perché dopo sono più produttivo, sveglio ecc.). Se invece si usa la forma in -ing, l'enfasi è sul piacere provocato dall'azione: I like having a nap after lunch, mi piace fare un sonnellino dopo pranzo (lo trovo davvero piacevole). -
4 -to dislike o not to like?-
Nota d'usoIl verbo to dislike nel senso di “non piacere” non viene usato frequentemente nell'inglese di tutti i giorni. In questo caso, si preferisce ricorrere alla forma negativa del verbo to like: I don't like coconut, non mi piace il cocco (non I dislike coconut). To dislike viene usato in contesti più formali e spesso esprime un sentimento più forte: She dislikes him, lo detesta. Come sostantivo, dislike è usato in locuzioni come: to take a dislike to sb./st. (o to have a dislike for sb./st.), prendere in antipatia; oltre che nella comune collocazione likes and dislikes, ciò che piace e non piace. -
